How do bone-conduction headphones work? Bone conduction headphones transmit sound through skull bones instead of the ear canal. This leaves your ear canals open as nothing is covering the inlet to your ear. This helps you be aware of your surroundings during activity times by better utilizing your hearing sense. Increase awareness of traffic and surroundings while running or cycling, engage within your social setting, or walk around campus or work while still having open hearing senses. All while decreasing potential harm to your ear drums.

Musicians: We know the plight of trying to practice with headphones that either eliminate the natural sound of your instrument or do not have enough volume to mix well. We tried Klatre Bone Conduction headphones with a professional vocalist, acoustic guitar, trumpet, piano, and drummer. The mix for the vocalist flying in a track was perfect—no more need to fight the pressure and head voice from In-Ear Monitors. Guitar, trumpet, and piano were a good mix. Drums up to half volume were fine. Drums at full volume drowned out the Klatre LS1, but with the included earplugs, it was about as good as it gets.

GearBroker’s impression: These are awesome and much needed in our society! We tested pairs while wearing glasses, with long hair (stationary and while running), and with a sweatband on. Klatre headphones stay put and are comfortable to wear in all cases. We here at GearBrokers find these headphones to be an “and” rather than a replacement to our EDC (everyday-carry) headphones/pods. These are better to use when you need increased sensory capacity.

We have heard from customers who walk from class to class across campus, runners, cyclists, skaters, and even outdoor sports enthusiasts, such as fishing and hunting, who want to increase sensory awareness in their surroundings over noise-canceling devices. We’ve also heard from people who don’t want to look goofy with bulky over-the-ear headphones but still want to avoid weird ear-gunky things stuck in their ears all day. Come back to society and open your senses with Klatre Bone Conduction Headphones!

A Brief History of Bone Conduction: From Beethoven to Today
One famous example of bone conduction comes from the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who was almost entirely deaf. Beethoven found a way to hear the piano through his jawbone by attaching a rod to his piano and clenching it in his teeth. By doing this, he was able to receive a perception of the sound when vibrations transferred from the piano to his jaw, proving that sound could reach our auditory system through another medium besides the eardrums.

Who Can Benefit from Bone Conduction Solutions?
Today, bone conduction solutions are used by many people with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, or single-sided deafness. These conditions can block sound waves from entering the inner ear through air conduction. Hearing through bone conduction bypasses these damaged, blocked, or missing parts of the ear and delivers sound vibrations directly to the inner ear.

How Bone Conduction Headphones Work?
One popular use of bone conduction technology is in the form of bone conduction headphones. These devices perform the role of eardrums by decoding sound waves and converting them into vibrations that the cochlea can receive directly without the eardrum being involved. The “sound” reaches the ears as vibrations through the bones, skull, and skin, making bone conduction headphones a popular option for those with hearing loss or tinnitus.

The Advantages of Bone Conduction Headphones: Comfort and Sound Quality
Because of their open-ear design, bone-conduction headphones can be helpful for anyone who wears hearing aids or suffers from tinnitus. They allow ambient sounds to enter the ear canal, effectively acting as a masking solution for individuals suffering from this condition. Additionally, many users report that bone-conduction headphones are very comfortable to wear and produce adequate sound quality.

Bone Conduction Headphones for Hearing Loss and Tinnitus Sufferers
While air conduction is the more commonly known way of hearing, bone conduction can significantly impact those with hearing loss. By using the body’s natural ability to conduct sound, bone conduction solutions like headphones can help those with certain types of hearing loss to hear more clearly and enjoy a better quality of life.

Conclusion
Compared to Air-conduction headphones, Bone-conduction headphones provide a more natural open-ear listening experience with minimal sound leakage. They also do not cause fatigue to the outer or middle ear and remain secure during physical activities. On the other hand, air-conduction headphones require a higher volume for sound clarity, which can drown out ambient noise. Additionally, the larger battery capacity required for this design increases the weight of the earbuds or headphones.
